Car Hire and Taxis

It is not necessary to hire a car to have an excellent holiday from the apartments as they are in an ideal position to walk to all amenities as well as being near to bus routes for travel to places such as Coral Bay and the market in the upper town.

However, many people like to hire a car to travel further afield. (See also: Driving)

Taxis

If you do not wish to hire a car for the whole holiday it is possible to take a taxi from the airport. These prices are changing with the fuel price increases. In June 2008 the cost was around €25-30 from Paphos.
To be sure, it is a good idea to book your taxi and agree a price beforehand.
Most taxis are fairly luxurious e.g. Mercedes.
The following taxis (Paphos based) have been found to be reliable:

Photis Savva (00 357) 99 621 58
Christos Taxi (00 357) 99516226

However, if you hire a car from Paphos it is usually possible to arrange to pick up/deliver the car at Paphos airport at no extra cost. This will save you the cost of the taxi.
If you book to hire from Easyrentacar (see below) they will deliver a car to Larnaca airport for €35 - much better than taxis.
Others may do something similar if you ask.

Car Hire

There are several car hire companies at the end of the road from the apartments which should be convenient to hire a car for a shorter period than your whole holiday e.g. a day out. However, it should be understood that the companies are likely to give priority to longer rentals, this will be relatively more expensive and there may be a shortage of vehicles in high season. 2-3 days should be easier.

If you wish to travel over the unmade roads of the Akamas Peninsula or the Troodos mountains it is worth hiring a 4WD (e.g. a Suzuki Vitara) - mostly to get the extra clearance to travel over rutted and potholed tracks.   However, ordinary saloon cars are satisfactory for the ordinary roads.
You may wish to consider air conditioning in summer.

It is often possible to negotiate better terms than the first offer or price on a web site.

The following car hire companies are worth considering. We are not making formal recommendations as different people have different experiences according to the arrangements they make.

Travelling to and from different airports

If you are arriving at Larnaca and wish to have a car for the duration of your stay it is usually logical to hire from Larnaca airport.
Most companies will theoretically agree to allow you to pick up at one airport and leave the car at another. They may make a small charge for this. In reality you may find this a problem with the smaller companies so there will be a balance to consider between the costs of big companies' rental fees and the cost of a one-way taxi.

Special Note

When making bookings check for extras such as insurance, collision damage waiver and, with companies such as Easycar.com (the Easyjet one), all the other extras such as cleaning fees!

Be aware that it is the norm in Cyprus to pick up the car with a full tank but return it with as little fuel in as possible and you will then be charged for fuel. Not all require this, however. If you are unhappy with this approach you may try to negotiate something different. Good luck!
